Phorate oxon sulfoxide is a cholinesterase inhibitor that inhibits the enzyme acetylcholinesterase. It has been used in analytical methods to measure acetylcholinesterase activity in plants and animals, including humans. Phorate oxon sulfoxide has also been shown to inhibit other enzymes, such as phosphatases and proteases, which are involved in cell division. The oxidation of phorate oxon sulfoxide produces cytotoxic compounds (oxidative metabolites) that can be toxic to plants and animals. These cytotoxic compounds may have adverse effects on the growth of host plants and animal cells.
