Descripción:Pentabamate is a reconstituted pharmaceutical dosage form of alginic acid, pentaerythritol, and fatty acids. Alginic acid is a polymeric matrix that is obtained from brown seaweed and consists primarily of the polysaccharide alginate. Pentaerythritol is a sugar alcohol that functions as a plasticizer for the preparation of this drug. This drug can be used for implanting into muscle tissue to treat certain types of epilepsy. The mechanism of action for this drug is not entirely known, but it may act by binding to fatty acid receptors on muscle cells and inhibiting fat breakdown or by displacing calcium ions from muscle cells which are necessary for contraction.
