1-Phenyl-2-propyn-1-one is a chemical compound that is used in wastewater treatment. It has a high second order rate constant and can be used as an oxygen source for the oxidation of chloride to chlorine. The reaction mechanism of this process is the following: 1) hydroxy group reacts with hydrogen chloride to produce hydroxychloride and light emission; 2) hydroxychloride reacts with chloride, releasing hydrogen chloride; 3) light emission is produced by the reaction of hydrogen chloride with activated chlorine, forming chloroform. 1-Phenyl-2-propyn-1-one can also be used as a growth factor for amines, which are important in the production of polymers.
