Polystyrene is not metabolized by mammals, but it may be metabolized by bacteria in the environment. The basic structure of polystyrene consists of long chains that are linked together by covalent bonds. The material's water permeability allows it to absorb moisture from its surroundings, which increases its weight and volume.
