(-)-trans-Pinocarveol is a volatile oil that is extracted from the bark of the African tree Xylopia aethiopica. This compound has been shown to have antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties in animal models. (-)-trans-Pinocarveol also has insecticidal properties, which may be due to its ability to inhibit the development of larvae of lepidoptera (e.g., moths) and other insects. The active form of (-)-trans-pinocarveol is trans-pinocarveol, which can be synthesized by adding a hydroxy group to the α-pinene molecule.
