Palladium(II) oxide hydrate is an inhibitor of the enzyme polyglutamate synthetase. It inhibits the production of polyglutamates and blocks the active site of the enzyme. Palladium(II) oxide hydrate has been shown to be effective in inhibiting murine polyglutamate synthetase, which is a key enzyme in glutathione metabolism. The binding site on the enzyme is determined experimentally and molecular modeling techniques have been used to determine its interactions with other residues. Palladium(II) oxide hydrate has been shown to catalyze the reaction between ATP and glutamine, forming glutamate and ADP. This reaction is reversible, with ATP hydrolysis as a competing reaction.
