Propylene glycol can be used in the analysis of glycols in human serum. This is done by adding propylene glycol to human serum and then analyzing the sample with gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy (GC-MS). The GC-MS analysis can be done on the whole serum or on specific proteins such as surface glycoproteins. Propylene glycol also plays an important role in body formation by supplying propylene units for the synthesis of polypeptides and lipids.
