a-Phenyl-a-(2-pyridyl)acetonitrile is a ligand with two nitrogen atoms and two solvents that can bind to transition metals. This compound has been used in catalysis as a catalyst for the reaction of halides with polyisoprene to form chlorides. It has also been used in the synthesis of coordination complexes, such as copper tetrakis(triphenylphosphine)palladium chloride, which have been shown to be useful in the photochemical polymerization of isoprene. The compound has also been found to be useful in spectroscopic studies, such as in the detection of thioacetamide or chloroform using UV/VIS spectroscopy.
