Prunasin is a small, naturally occurring hydrolysis product of the plant enzyme carthamus tinctorius. It has been shown to inhibit the proliferation of prostate cancer cells in vitro and in vivo. Prunasin has also been shown to induce apoptosis, or programmed cell death, by activating pro-apoptotic proteins such as p53 and bax. Prunasin is a pro-apoptotic protein that can be used to study the matrix effect on polymerase chain reactions (PCR). The optimum concentration for prunasin is between 0.1 and 1 uM. The optimum pH for prunasin is between 6.5 and 7.5 at 37°C and it has a glycosidic bond with fatty acids as its chemical structure.
