Descripción

1-Pyrenebutyryl chloride is a cationic polymerization agent that is used to produce polymeric materials. It is an intermediate in the production of chitosan gel, which has potential applications in drug delivery. 1-Pyrenebutyryl chloride can be synthesized by reacting propranolol hydrochloride with two equivalents of pyrenebutyraldehyde and magnesium oxide. This reaction yields the desired product in high yield, as well as magnesium chloride and a small amount of chloroform. The product can be purified by vacuum distillation and recrystallization from methanol. 1-Pyrenebutyryl chloride has been shown to have reversible covalent bonds with several functional groups including carboxylate, amino, hydroxyl, phosphate, and sulfonate groups.
