(-)-Pyrenophorol is an enantiomer of pyrenophorin, which is a natural product that inhibits the enzyme gyrase. Gyrase is involved in the process of DNA replication, which is essential for bacterial growth. (-)-Pyrenophorol has been shown to be more potent than pyrenophorin due to its stereoselective properties. It has been used as a fungicide and herbicide in industrial processes, such as tilling and dry-cropping, where it prevents the growth of fungi and weeds. The chemical structure of (-)-pyrenophorol has been determined by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy.
