Pyribencarb is a synthetic growth regulator used as an agrochemical. It is a sulfonic acid that inhibits the activity of acetolactate synthase, which is an enzyme involved in branched-chain amino acid metabolism. Pyribencarb can be applied to crops as a control agent or to regulate plant growth. This product has been shown to inhibit the activity of sulfhydryl enzymes, including those with a hydroxyl group and alkylthio group. It also inhibits the synthesis of polycarboxylic acids, such as oxalic acid, by inhibiting the conversion of pyruvic acid into alpha-ketoglutaric acid. Pyribencarb can be used as an analytical method for determining c1-c4 haloalkyl groups in kidney beans.
