Pyrazine-2-carbothioamide (PZCA) is a drug that has been used in clinical trials for the treatment of depression. It also has bactericidal properties, which are due to its ability to coordinate metal ions in the bacterial cell wall, thereby preventing the formation of essential enzymes and inhibiting protein synthesis. PZCA is active against Mycobacterium avium. The mechanism of action of this drug is not yet fully understood, but it has shown strong activity against Trichophyton mentagrophytes and moderate activity against Staphylococcus aureus. PZCA also has anti-inflammatory properties, which may be due to its inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis.
