3-Phenoxypropionitrile is a solvent that is used in the synthesis of pharmaceuticals and other organic compounds. It is a colorless liquid with a sweet odor, which can be obtained by reacting phenol with propylamine followed by nitration. 3-Phenoxypropionitrile has been shown to be an effective inhibitor of deamination, which is the conversion of amino acids into ammonia. This reaction can be carried out using alkoxides, alcohols, or liquid chromatography. 3-Phenoxypropionitrile has also been shown to inhibit the formation of nitrosamines and other carcinogens.
