Piperazine is a molecule that binds to iron and has been used in the treatment of infectious diseases. It has been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria, such as Salmonella typhi, by binding to iron ions. The piperazine molecule also binds to benzalkonium chloride, a disinfectant that is commonly used in medical facilities. Piperazine-N,N'-bis(2-hydroxypropanesulfonic acid) dihydrate (PPDH) was found to be an effective inhibitor of chlorophyll a., and hydroxyl ions, which are responsible for the photosynthetic process and membrane integrity respectively. PPDH is used in many biological studies as an analytical method for measuring fatty acid content.
