2-Phenylethanethiol is a chemical compound that has been studied in the laboratory. It is an aromatic compound that reacts with light at low energy, emitting light in the visible region of the spectrum. 2-Phenylethanethiol binds to urine samples and forms a complex with trifluoroacetic acid. This complex can be used for analytical chemistry in order to measure the concentration of 2-phenylethanethiol in urine samples. The molecule has also been studied as a potential anti-cancer drug due to its ability to bind to DNA and inhibit the synthesis of proteins that are vital for cell division. 2-Phenylethanethiol has shown promising results in preclinical trials on MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cells, where it inhibited cell proliferation and induced apoptosis by inhibiting ribosomal protein synthesis and RNA polymerase activity.
