Phthalocyanine is a molecule that shows antimicrobial properties. It has been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria, fungi, and yeast by inhibiting the synthesis of DNA. In vitro assays have been used to demonstrate the antibacterial activity of phthalocyanines against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. The mechanism of action involves binding to the bacterial cell membrane, which blocks the uptake of phosphate ions. This leads to inhibition of phospholipid synthesis, causing cell death. Phthalocyanine also exhibits anticancer activity in vitro and in vivo models. It inhibits skin cancer cells by binding to metal chelates that are present in these cells and then reacting with oxygen radicals. These reactions lead to DNA damage and apoptosis (cell death).
