The low-dose group of this compound was found to be not carcinogenic. 1,4-Dichlorobenzene is metabolized by oxidation by cytochrome P450 enzymes to produce alkanoic acid, which may react with transfer reactions and benzalkonium chloride to form toxic metabolites. This chemical has shown toxicity in mice, causing kidney damage and inhibiting enzyme activities.
