Polyoxyethylene castor oil (PCO) is a non-ionic surfactant that has been used in agrochemicals and pharmaceuticals. PCO can reaggregate cells, which may be due to its ability to inhibit the activity of microglia cells. PCO has also been shown to bind to the surface of particles and prevent them from aggregating, with regulatory effects on the immune system. The pharmacokinetic properties of PCO have been studied in rats, where it was found that gabapentin had a decreased bioavailability when administered with PCO. However, there are no reports of PCO being toxic or carcinogenic.
PCO is not active against cancer cells, but has been shown to have anti-inflammatory effects against Th17 cell activation and cellular target in autoimmune diseases. It has also been shown to cause genetic damage in rat liver cells and mouse lymphocytes at high concentrations.
