1-Cbz-2-Piperidinecarboxaldehyde is a fluorescent probe that can be used to detect the presence of copper ions in solution. It has been shown to react with copper ions by undergoing a ring-opening reaction with the hydrazone bond. The fluorescence intensity increases as the concentration of copper ions increases. The labeling reaction between 1-Cbz-2-Piperidinecarboxaldehyde and copper ions can be detected using fluorescence imaging techniques and colorimetric assays. 1-Cbz-2-Piperidinecarboxaldehyde is also able to bind to caco-2 cells, which are cells from the human colon that can be used in experiments related to drug absorption and distribution.
