3-Pyridylamidoxime is a hypoglycemic agent that inhibits the enzyme acetyl-CoA carboxylase. It has been shown to be useful in the treatment of type 2 diabetes. 3-Pyridylamidoxime is also used as an antimicrobial agent to treat bacterial infections, such as urinary tract infections. The drug binds to the anionic site on the enzyme and prevents it from forming a complex with its substrate, which is required for catalysis. This leads to accumulation of acetyl-CoA and reduced fatty acid synthesis. 3-Pyridylamidoxime can also act as a competitive inhibitor for other enzymes such as pyrazolyl hydroxamic acid or metformin, which are used for diabetes treatment.
