It can be used for thermal expansion measurements of dextran sulfate solutions and in the preparation of cell culture samples prior to histological analysis. The phase transition temperature of perfluoro(2-butyltetrahydrofuran) is 4.6°C, which means that it is liquid at room temperature and can be used as a vehicle to deliver magnetic particles to lung tissue. Perfluoro(2-butyltetrahydrofuran) also has an experimental model for studying the effects of laser ablation on lung cells.
