It is an oil-soluble liquid that reacts with sodium salts to form sodium salts of hydroxybenzoic acid. The reaction mechanism of 1,2,3,4,5-pentamethylcyclopentadiene involves the formation of an acylium ion from the carboxylate group and the nucleophilic attack by the alkoxide ion on the carbonyl carbon atom. The x-ray crystal structure of 1,2,3,4,5-pentamethylcyclopentadiene has been determined using sodium tetrahydroxoaluminate as a crystallization agent.
