4-Propoxyphthalonitrile is a colorless liquid that is soluble in organic solvents and has a boiling point of 135 degrees Celsius. It is synthesized by the reaction of phthalonitrile with propylene oxide, which generates an anion radical that can transfer electrons to sulfate ions. These electrons can then be used to catalyze the formation of sulfate esters, which are irreversibly hydrolyzed to form sulfates.
