4-Phenylethynylphthalic anhydride is a reactive chemical that undergoes an exothermic reaction with water, producing heat and forming the corresponding diphenyl ether. The monosodium salt of 4-phenylethynylphthalic anhydride has been shown to be used as a model system for studying the condensation polymerization of phenols. Magnetic resonance spectroscopy was used to determine the structure and viscosity of the dehydration product. This compound has been shown to increase in viscosity when heated, which may be due to thermal expansion.
