Pinosylvin dimethyl ether is a natural product that can be found in the resin of pine trees. It has been shown to have inhibitory properties against colorectal adenocarcinoma and human pathogens. Pinosylvin dimethyl ether has also been shown to have antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, fungi, and parasites. It is not active against yeast or viruses. The mechanism of action may be due to its ability to inhibit p21, a protein that regulates cell cycle progression. Pinosylvin dimethyl ether also inhibits transcription-polymerase chain reaction and RNA synthesis in vitro by binding to the enzyme DNA gyrase. This binding prevents the formation of an enzyme-substrate complex with the DNA polymerase that is required for DNA replication and transcription processes.
