Descripción:

Picrotoxinin is a hydroxylated fatty acid that inhibits the function of the enzyme polymerase chain reaction (PCR) by binding to the active site of this enzyme. It also has physiological activities, such as an effect on gamma-aminobutyric acid levels in rat striatal tissue or on benzodiazepine binding sites in rat brain tissue. Picrotoxinin is also used as a reagent for monoclonal antibody production, as it can be coupled to proteins via a fatty acid group. Picrotoxinin inhibits bacterial growth by binding to bacterial 16S ribosomal RNA and inhibiting protein synthesis. It has been shown to be effective against chlorogenic acids-producing bacteria, such as Streptomyces antibioticus and Bacillus cereus.
