Phellodendrine chloride is a plant-based alkaloid that has been used historically in the treatment of cancer. Phellodendrine chloride inhibits mitochondrial membrane potential, which can lead to cell death. Jatrorrhizine hydrochloride is a major metabolite of phellodendrine chloride that has been shown to reduce pancreatic tumor size and prolong survival time in mice with pancreatic tumors. This metabolite also blocks the production of reactive oxygen species by inhibiting cytochrome P450 activity. This process leads to a reduction in mitochondrial membrane potential, causing cell death. The extract can be purified from the plant using a liquid chromatography technique prior to use.
