Phenylhydrazine is an organic compound that is used as a reagent in the synthesis of dyes and pharmaceuticals. It is also used to manufacture polyesters and acrylonitrile. Phenylhydrazine reacts with potassium t-butoxide to form a diazonium salt, which undergoes diazotisation to form an ammonium salt. This reaction can be used for the preparation of aminopyrazoles by reacting phenylhydrazine with carboxylic acids. The acid groups on the phenylhydrazine react with the amino groups on the aminopyrazole, forming a new compound called pyrazolone. Phenylhydrazine has been shown to cause mastocytosis in rats, although it does not produce any effect in humans.
