Pafuramidine is a cyclic peptide that inhibits the mitochondrial membrane potential in susceptible cells. This results in an increase in the production of reactive oxygen species, which leads to cell death. Pafuramidine has been shown to be effective against HIV infection and other infectious diseases. Pafuramidine also interacts with chemical inhibitors and antimicrobial agents, such as cytochrome p450 (CYP) enzymes. These interactions are significant because CYP enzymes are involved in the metabolism of many drugs and environmental chemicals. Additionally, pafuramidine is an oral prodrug that is metabolized by CYP enzymes before it can exert its antimicrobial effects.
