Palmitoylethanolamide (PEA) is an endogenous substance that inhibits the synthesis of viral proteins and can be used to treat infectious diseases. It interacts with toll-like receptors, which are molecules on the surface of cells that detect pathogens and initiate an immune response. PEA has been shown to inhibit the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, reducing neuronal death in a rat model. PEA also affects energy metabolism and protein synthesis. This drug is not active against bacterial or fungal infections but may be used to treat conditions such as multiple sclerosis and chronic pain caused by nerve damage.
