Perfluoroalkyl alcohol (PFA) is a fluorinated, low molecular weight cationic polymer that can be used as an emulsifier in pharmaceutical dosage forms. PFA has been shown to form stable hydrogen bonds with fatty acids and proteins due to its cationic nature. PFA also has the ability to chelate metals and bind to metal ions, which are essential for chemical stability. PFA is structurally similar to long-chain fatty acids, which allows it to inhibit the enzyme activity of hydroxylase enzymes and mineralization of bones.
