a-Quinquethiophene is a model system for coexistence, which refers to the ability of two or more substances to be present in a system at the same time. It is used as a photovoltaic material in devices that convert light into electricity. It has been shown that this chemical only crystallizes as one of two different polymorphs at room temperature, but it can crystallize as both polymorphs when heated to higher temperatures. The diffraction pattern obtained from copper oxide impregnated with a-quinquethiophene showed hypsochromic peaks, indicative of an affinity between these two compounds. This affinity was confirmed by the observation that pyrrole binds to copper oxide, and then reacts with a-quinquethiophene to form copper pyrrole complexes on the surface of the copper oxide particles.
