Rac trans-2-phenylcyclopropanecarboxylic acid is an enantiopure compound that can be used in asymmetric synthesis. Rac trans-2-phenylcyclopropanecarboxylic acid is synthesized by the decoupling of ethyl diazoacetate with a copper catalyst, followed by an intramolecular cyclization to form the final product. The nitrogen atoms were introduced during the imine formation and this bond is cleaved during the catalytic cycle. This reaction was found to be catalyzed by a homogeneous catalyst, which is advantageous for commercial production. Rac trans-2-phenylcyclopropanecarboxylic acid has been found to have a high turnover frequency and high kinetic resolution.
