It functions as an enzyme cofactor and aids in energy metabolism, protein synthesis, and other biochemical processes. Seleno-L-methionine has been shown to have a protective effect against oxidative damage by scavenging free radicals. It also increases mitochondrial membrane potential and prevents the release of proapoptotic factors from mitochondria into the cytosol.
