Sodium picosulfate is a bowel preparation that is used to cleanse the bowel before diagnostic procedures. It is a sodium salt of picosulfuric acid, which is a strong oxidizing agent. Sodium picosulfate can be administered orally or rectally and acts by reducing the amount of hydrogen ions in the colon, thus increasing water retention and softening stools. The most common side effect of this medication is diarrhea. Multivariate logistic regression analysis has shown that those with a body mass index (BMI) greater than 30 kg/m2 are more likely to experience diarrhea after taking this medication than those with a BMI less than 30 kg/m2. Sodium picosulfate should not be taken by people who have an allergy to nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).
