Selenium is a chemical element that has been shown to have anticancer properties. The anticancer activity of selenium may be due to its ability to bind to the glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) enzyme and increase its activities. Selenium can also activate other enzymes, such as thioredoxin reductase and glutathione reductase, which are involved in reducing reactive oxygen species. Selenium has been shown to reduce the growth of cancer cells by inhibiting cell proliferation and inducing apoptosis. It is also used as a redox probe for plasma mass spectrometry measurements and has been used as a fluorescent probe for fluorescence detection in reaction solutions. Selenium is an essential trace mineral for humans and animals, with high values found in Brazil nuts, seafood, grains, cereals, eggs, beef liver, pork liver, and oysters.
