Squalamine is a drug that has been shown to have in vitro antifungal activity against Candida albicans. Squalamine also has in vitro antibacterial efficacy against gram-positive species, such as Streptococcus pneumoniae and Staphylococcus aureus.
In vivo studies have been performed using the squalamine analogue, SSQ-5, which is an active compound of squalamine. The SSQ-5 analogue was shown to be toxic against human carcinoma cells and was effective in combination therapy with polymyxin B for the treatment of Gram-negative infections.
