Stearoyl ethanolamide is a glycol ester that has been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria by binding to their receptor site. Stearoyl ethanolamide has also been shown to have an effect on the locomotor activity of experimental animals and may reduce energy metabolism. This compound has been used as an antimicrobial agent in a number of applications, including treatment of infectious diseases, anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10, and pharmacological treatment for obesity. The receptor activity of stearoyl ethanolamide was studied using an experimental model involving α7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptors in Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells.
