Sulfamethazine is a macrolide antibiotic that has been used for the treatment of bacterial infections in humans and animals. Sulfamethazine-13C6 is a novel sulfonamide compound with a 13C-labeled acetyl group. The 13C-labeled acetyl group enables the determination of the time course of the metabolic processes, which can be analyzed by ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography (UPLC) and mass spectrometry. This method is also applicable to other substances such as carbamazepine, caffeine, and acetylsalicylic acid.

Sulfamethazine-13C6 is soluble in water and nonpolar organic solvents such as acetonitrile. It can be used for wastewater treatment because it exerts an antimicrobial effect against bacteria and fungi found in wastewater. Sulfamethazine-13C6 can be used to analyze environmental pollution caused by pharmaceuticals
