It has been shown to inhibit the activity of sulindac sulfide, a cyclase inhibitor and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory agent, in human polymorphonuclear leukocytes and cancer cells. (Z)-5-Fluoro-2-methyl-1-[p-(methylthio)benzylidene]indene-3-acetic acid also inhibits the mitochondrial membrane potential and reduces the growth of cancer cells by inhibiting proteins that are involved in cell proliferation.
