Sodium ethylxanthate reacts with fatty acids to form soaps and it has been shown to be effective in removing particle matter from water. The mechanism of sodium ethylxanthate is not well understood but it has been shown to be involved in nucleic acid transcription and DNA replication. Sodium ethylxanthate also causes cell lysis through an inorganic acid-dependent mechanism.
