Sulfometuron methyl ester is a herbicide that inhibits plant growth by inhibiting the synthesis of essential amino acids. It binds to tryptophan and prevents it from being incorporated into proteins. Sulfometuron methyl ester is used as a selective herbicide in agriculture to control broad-leaved weeds and grasses. This compound has been shown to have no effect on the growth of bacteria or fungi, but is toxic to plants. The mechanism of action of sulfometuron methyl ester is not well understood, but it may be due to its ability to bind with inhibitors such as other amino acids and nucleotides, which are necessary for protein synthesis.
