Silver iodide is a silver-containing compound that has antimicrobial properties. It has been used for the preparation of samples for electron microscopy, as an antimicrobial agent in water purification, and to control the growth of bacteria on food and medical devices. The thermal expansion of silver iodide is linearly related to the particle size, with a phase transition temperature of -10 degrees Celsius. Silver iodide also exhibits high electrical conductivity at low frequencies. Silver iodide is soluble in water, but insoluble in alcohols and nonpolar solvents. It can be synthesized by reacting silver nitrate with potassium hydroxide or copper chloride and then heating the mixture to produce anhydrous silver chloride or silver nitrite respectively.
