Sodium thioctate is a pharmaceutical dosage form of the drug thiocyanate. It has been used to treat congestive heart failure, as well as cancer and inflammation. Thiocyanate is a salt of hydrocyanic acid, which is formed by the reaction of hydroxide with sulfur dioxide. The salt reacts with magnesium to form a complex that is soluble in water. This compound has also been shown to inhibit polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in cell cultures. In addition, sodium thiocyanate inhibits glutamate dehydrogenase and α-glucosidase, which are enzymes involved in the metabolism of glucose and release of insulin, respectively.
