Silver chloride is a chemical compound of silver and chlorine. It is used as an antimicrobial agent because of its bactericidal activity against bacteria and fungi. Silver chloride has shown to have high efficacy against gram-positive bacteria, such as staphylococci and streptococci, but is not active against gram-negative bacteria or fungi. Silver chloride can be used in wastewater treatment with copper chloride or potassium dichromate, which have been shown to act synergistically with silver chloride. Silver chloride also has been found to have physiological effects on the human body, including decreased heart rate and blood pressure. The addition of zirconium oxide increases the antibacterial properties of this compound.
