It is used as an industrial chemical, a catalyst for the synthesis of pharmaceuticals, and in textile processing. It has been shown to be effective in the production of chlorophyll a. Sodium hexadecyl sulfate is also used as a fluorescence probe to measure metal ions such as Ca2+, Cu2+, Fe3+, Mn2+, Ni2+ and Zn2+.
