Selenium sulfide is a selenium-containing compound that has in vitro antifungal activity, which may be due to its ability to inhibit the synthesis of ergosterol. Selenium sulfide has been shown to have a synergistic effect with benzalkonium chloride when used as a preservative for reaction solutions. Selenium sulfide also has the ability to react with copper chloride and release hydrogen gas, which can be detected using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Selenium sulfide also has potential toxicity and carcinogenic effects, as well as an ability to bind to soybean extract.
