Descripción

Smilagenin is a natural compound that has been shown to have a wide range of biological properties. It inhibits the proliferation of cancer cells, such as HL-60 cells, by altering mitochondrial membrane potential and increasing apoptosis. Smilagenin also has an anti-inflammatory effect in response to bacterial infection. In addition, this compound can be used to treat wastewater and is able to break down polymers in the presence of light.
Smilagenin belongs to the group of pyrrolizidines, which are polycyclic compounds that are derived from quillaja saponaria (soap bark). This group includes other biologically active compounds such as tetrandrine and berberine. The pharmacological effects of smilagenin may be due to its ability to activate toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) and TLR2, leading to the activation of signaling pathways involved in neuroprotection.
