Sodium pyrithione is a skin-cleaning agent that has been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria and fungi on the skin. It is used in combination with other antimicrobial agents, such as sodium carbonate, as a preservative in cosmetics. The mechanism of action of sodium pyrithione is not well understood, but it may be due to its ability to act as an intracellular calcium ion channel blocker, thereby preventing bacterial growth. Sodium pyrithione also inhibits ATP levels by binding to the n-oxide group at the active site of ATP synthase. This prevents ATP production and leads to cell death.
